Homemade Carpet Stain Remover / Cleaning Solution

You just had this great party the night before and everyone had a wonderful time. But this morning as you clean up, you realize just how bad the stains are on the carpet mostly from spills. Fortunately you know what every spill was caused from. But where do you get the perfect cleaning solution to remove all of the carpet stains? The answer is that you don’t have to go to the store for the perfect stain remover per se. Many effective carpet stain removers can be made from homemade solutions.

For example, you can make a stain remover for beer by making the following homemade solution:

1. Mix one teaspoon of a mild detergent with no bleach and a cup of lukewarm water.

2. Blot the area

3. Mix two thirds cup of water with one third cup of white vinegar and blot the area.

4. Take a sponge with clean water and blot.

Another favorite at parties is the cheese tray. But cheese dropped on the floor can leave stains too. Here is a homemade solution for cheese (also works for coffee):

1. Mix one teaspoon of a mild detergent with no bleach and a cup of lukewarm water.

2. Blot the area

3. Mix one tablespoon of ammonia with one half cup of water and blot the area.

4. Take a sponge with clean water and blot.

Chewing gum is a tough one. While it is not a stain per se, it is still something that damages the look of the carpet and takes a special method to remove. The first thing to try to remove small amounts of gun is rubbing ice over the area. This will harden the chewing gum and it could be that is all it takes. If that does not work then a stronger homemade solution will be required as follows:

1. Get some dry-cleaning solvent and sponge a very small amount into the area with the chewing gum. Be sure to use a small amount because we are talking about harsh chemicals now. And this is only calls for dry-cleaning fluid. Do not use lighter fluid, gasoline, or any other flammable or harsh chemical.

2. Mix a mild detergent with one teaspoon of water and blot.

Another safe and non-toxic carpet stain remover is just simple club soda. Don’t get the club soda with sugar in it but just plain club soda. Apply and blot.

Pet urine can be troublesome. Remove the majority of the urine by blotting with white paper towels, wash it with liquid dish detergent (not too much) and make a rinse by mixing one half cup of diluted vinegar in one quart of warm water. Finally use paper towels underneath a brick to soak up excess moisture and allow it to dry.

Red wine and grease spots can be removed by blotting up the excess liquid and rubbing baking soda or corn starch and letting it absorb into the stain overnight. Vacuum it up the next day.

You may have to go back and redo the procedure for your particular stain. Just remember to not rub too hard and never rub in a swirling motion. It is always good to test your homemade solution in an inconspicuous area too.
