Young Children, Kids, Babies and Carpet Care
Kids enjoy a nice carpet in their room too and it is even more important that the carpet be kept clean, be safe, and be comfortable because infants, toddlers, and young children spend most of their time on the floor. It also helps if carpets in kids’ rooms are interesting too.
Let’s talk first about carpet cleanliness. This is probably the most important thing you can do to the carpet in your home and especially in play areas and your kids’ rooms. Carpets get filled with dust, pet dander, mites, pet hair, pet urine, food spills, tracked in dirt, and all sorts of foreign matter brought in from the outside. Think about it. Someone outside spits on the sidewalk and anyone in your family could track that into your home. In moist climates, carpets are also susceptible to mold too. Your child is at risk for all kinds of disease and respiratory problems if he or she plays on a carpet full of this matter.
You have a couple of options. You could just not have carpet in a child’s play area or you can keep the carpet. Your children will more than likely want to keep the carpet. So if you choose to have carpeting where your children play, there are some basic measures you can take to keep the floor clean and safe.
This is just a recommendation but you will find it is probably the best decision you will ever make in terms of carpet care: Don’t allow eating and drinking in the bedrooms (or even the living areas if you want to take care of your carpet).
Kids like to take food and beverages to the back rooms and unintentionally spill them but not tell anyone about it. The end result is you end up with a spill that no one knows about, drying, and making a permanent stain. Plus, food eaten anywhere leaves crumbs that will draw the roaches and other insects. This makes for an unsanitary condition for your child as well.
The other recommendation is to have a no-shoe rule in the house after you get your carpet. This is something practiced in Asian countries for centuries and the practice has a lot of value in terms of keeping your floors clean as well as protecting the appearance of your carpet. Stop and think about it. Just think about what you would otherwise track in with your shoes.
In addition to regular vacuuming, steam cleaning, and cleaning spills as soon as possible, the above two measures will make a strong system to keeping your carpets sanitary and not put your children at risk in terms of health when they play on the floor.
