Regular Carpet Care Makes Your Carpet Last Longer

A new carpet will last for many years if you take regular care of it. Remember when you first got the new carpet? It was really nice. But if you had to replace the existing carpet in your home, you know what a pain it was to install it. You and the carpet installers had to move furniture from one room to the next in order to clear the floor to install. You don’t want to go through that again do you? So take some time to learn about regular carpet care so that you can make it last for many years.

Regular vacuuming is probably the single most important thing you can do in the regular carpet care. You need to do this at least weekly to remove all the tracked in soil and sand. Remember that sand is abrasive and as people track it in the sand particles can make tiny cuts in the fiber of your carpet as people walk over it. If you have pile carpet, vacuum against the lay of the carpet so that the cleaner will lift the fibers and get the dirt underneath.

You can bet that over time you will get spots on the carpet. It is good to educate yourself on the removal of certain types of spots such as crayon, oil, and wine. There are different methods for each. The retailer that you purchased the carpet from will probably have informational material available telling you how to clean up different substances on your carpet.

You will need to deep clean your carpet two or three times per year. In doing so, you will get a shampooed carpet with a fresh smell. But in between the deep cleaning sessions, you’ll want to use some carpet powder cleaners to keep it fresh. The powder is usually spread over the carpet after vacuuming and then vacuumed out. Some powder will remain to provide ongoing clean scent and freshness.

You can deep clean your carpet by either hiring a professional or purchasing a deep cleaning machine from your local household goods retailer. The idea behind a deep cleaner is that hot water or steam is injected into the carpet. This causes a suspension effect on the dirt and soil hidden deep within the fibers. Then, suction is used to extract the suspended particles and the liquid back into a canister. The industrial strength extraction cleaners use steam to inject into the carpet and are much more effective but you will need to hire someone for those. Drying the carpet is critical after the deep cleaning and you might want to use some fans to speed the process up so that mold does not grow between the floor and the carpet.

There may be some high traffic areas in your home and one way to prevent a path from being worn on the carpet there is to use throw rugs. Throw rugs can even give a little contrast to your carpet while protecting the high traffic area.

Take good care of your carpet. It will last you a long time.
